1/11/14  Dennis P. Hollinger, “The Ethics of Contraception: A Theological Assessment,” Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 56.4 (2013): 683-96. An excellent treatment. Argues that theological reflection on the matter of contraception has been generally lacking, and that major shifts in the church as to its acceptance have been made without due consideration. He does argue for its acceptance, engaging most directly its official rejection by the Roman Catholic church, but seeks to do so in a theologically nuanced way. Some good historical material as to earlier voices in the church about contraception.

1/11/14  Jimmy Agan, “Departing FromAnd RecoveringTradition: John Calvin and the Imitation of Christ,” Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 56.4 (2013): 801-14. A rather simple article, which avers that Calvin has wrongly been portrayed as standing against the imitation of Christ in favor of union with Christ. Agan argues that Calvin certainly taught Christians should imitate Christ, but should only do so on the basis of their union with Christ. Union with Christ and imitation of Christ are compatible, not antithetical.

1/8/14  Luke Timothy Johnson, “Oikonomia Theou: The Theological Voice of 1 Timothy from the Perspective of Pauline Authorship,” Horizons in Biblical Theology 21 (1999): 87-104. I found this article very helpful for its extensive comparison between 1 Timothy and 1 Corinthians (a dozen parallels noted on pp. 94-95; see my “1 Timothy and 1 Corinthians.” One could argue that a pseudonymous author modeled 1 Timothy on a Pauline 1 Corinthians, but it would seem the parallels would more strongly support Pauline authorship. An important premise of Johnson’s: “1 Timothy perceives the order of creation and the order of society as continuous with each other, and in a very deep sense as continuous with the household which is the assembly of the living God, as well” (100); this is a far-reaching point and has significant implications for the “women in the church” debate, especially given the way Paul supports his contentions in 1 Tim 2:9-15 (although Johnson is not, to my knowledge, a complementarian; he looks beyond the “order of creation” to the “order of salvation” (keying off the phrase “the living God”) and “ways in which the gospel is not only continuous with the structures of society but also transcends them”).
